The are at least two different paths for acting responsibly about zero population growth. One is acting responsibly in connection with one's self and immediate family. The other is acting responsibly in connection with the planet and world community.
In acting responsibly in connection with the world community many of us are in no position to do much more than (a) vote for leaders likely to solve the problem (or at least not make it worse), (b) talk about the problem in a way that spreads awareness and gets more people concerned and (c) don't have too many babies. Beyond that most of us lack the power to do much about the problem.
In acting responsibly in connection with one's self and immediate family I suppose you could so into survival mode. You could hoard and grow your own food. You could provide security to survive an eventual crisis (i.e. arm yourself and build a panic room). You could educate yourself so that you have the skills to survive in a world where food, energy and other resources become scarce. Even if the worse never comes you can derive some peace of mind from the exercise.
The is an old joke about two campers about to be attacked by a bear. One starts putting on his shoes. The other says, "Why are you doing that? You can't outrun a bear." The one replies, "I only have to outrun you."
If you are concerned about a crisis then all you need to do is survive the people who were not prepared. Once they are gone the population problem is over.
