Setting Weight Loss or Weight Gain Goals
One of the most important issues in a people’s lives today is their weight. While
it is true that most people who are unhappy with their weight would like to lose
weight, there is that certain population out there such as body builders or football
players who would like to gain the right kind of weight.
Typically when people set weight loss (or gain) goals they set them based on a certain
number of pounds they want to lose or gain. This, however, may not be the most appropriate
type of goal to set. For instance, it is a lot easier for someone who is 200 pounds
to lose 10 pounds than it is for someone who weighs 120 pounds to lose 10 pounds.
In many cases a more appropriate measure might be to set a weight loss or gain goal
as a percentage of the person’s weight or to even set a BMI goal to achieve.
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a measure of a person's weight as it relates to
their height. The resulting number equates to an assessment of the person's
body fat. BMI does not take into account bone density or the muscular nature of
a person. It assumes an individual of average build. Stronger or "big-boned"
people should adjust their score accordingly. Why not consider setting a BMI goal?
BMI Range for Adults with Average Build
Below 18.5 is underweight
From 18.5 - 24.9 is normal
From 25.0 - 29.9 is overweight
30.0 and above is considered obese
How To Use a Weight Calculator
The Weight Calculator is a handy tool to help you set diet and exercise goals for
yourself. Simply input your "Before" or starting weight and 1 other parameter.
The calculator will fill in the other data on the form based on these 2 items.
Use Body Mass Index (BMI) Together with a Weight Calculator
You can use the Weight and BMI Calculators together. Once you have the results from
the BMI Calculator, enter your “Before” weight and the amount that you need to gain
or lose (from the BMI Calculator) into the Weight Calculator to find out what your
ideal weight should be and what percentage of weight you will need to gain or lose
to achieve your ideal weight.
